Y'know that Drama Club cake? I sliced the end of my thumb, vertically, through the nail whilst cutting the cake!
Spent an hour getting it cleaned, strip stitched and bandaged by nurses, who were enthralled and mixed up in a fierce debate over whether to use normal stitches or not becuase it was such an unusual and interesting flesh wound.
Now have very painful left thumb, bandaged to the size of a sausage! OW!
AND I'm going to have to bathe myself whilst wearing a plastic glove for the next five days! *headdesk*

I hadn't realised it had been so long since I'd posted. Oops!
I agree it's sad that Michael Jackson died, especially for his young children, but the constant, repetitive nature of the news on TV and the web is getting boring now...
I've just been sprinkling salt on the slugs that have dared to try and break into my vegetable patch. I know it's not very kind, but I really want those veggies to work this year!
Work has been very, very hard this week - I'm working like mad to try and get the Arts Awards students ready for their moderation next week, but work's been doubly hard as there is so much going on right now that makes me feel extremely put-upon and undervalued. I'm quite disillusioned about my current job at the moment.
We've still not got holiday booked, but it looks like we may book a cruise round the Mediterranean, which would be brilliant and give us a bit of everything that we want! I'm excited about the prospect of it!
Purdles went mad with the zany rainy weather yesterday, think she's much happier when the weather's more stable!
This has been quite a disjointed post, but it gives a taste of where I am right now...

I DROVE today! I DROVE J and I, in our CAR into town for Thai dinner! Then I DROVE him to look at cars at the VW garage and then I DROVE to Tesco to buy
Amazingly, it only cost £35 to add me to his insurance, even though my outstanding claim against me for the crash in 2006 is still ongoing and at a loss of £35k to date before they've even settled liability.
WIN!
I bought some accessories in Primarni today and will post pictorials tomoz.
In other news: me twitter is not porting into my facebook status and this is irritating! However, it is a sign of how much of a good week I've had that something this small and insignificant is even registering on my annoyance scale! :)

It's really hot and sunny and I should be out in the world with a spring in my step...
Unfortunately, I'm holed up at home sick... Haven't eaten anything since breakfast yesterday and have stomach cramps and a banging headache...
...Which is being made all the worse by the sheer din being created by the tree surgeons' chainsaws and grinder. The giant laurel tree at the bottom of my garden is being removed today, which is a really good thing, as it'll let so much more light into the garden, but REALLY?! Today?! When I feel like this?!
SUCH bad timing!
I know they are also making a hellish mess of my tidy garden and I can't get out there to sort it out, which is a kind of torture.
I have ingested one litre of water so far today - wondering if puking-induced fasting counts as a detox?!

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.
watercolourblue picked mine for me:

I love icons and am constantly on the look-out for new ones. I seach the icons comms regularly and actually follow
pavanes and
toocuteicons all the time so that I know about new ones and customisation offers asap!
1)The first icons is by
pavanes and was my first ever customised icon - I generally use an icon with my name on it for commenting/replying, so that I'm easily identifiable. Also, this one has a cat playing in the garden, so was ideal or me!
2)Shoes are one of my obsessions, so when I saw this one by
toocuteiconsI just had to snap it up. I like having icons that will fit to the theme of a post.
3) This is by
pavanes and was my first theme icon that I collected when I re-oened this journal. Obviously, I love baking, but I also adore this one for its retro-kitsch-ness!
4) By
toocuteicons, this one appeals to me threefold: I'm constantly fighting clinical despression, so it reminds me to make a renewed effort to be happy. Also, I'm really affected by the weather, so it helps there... and on a less depp note, it's got plants and gardening on it, lol.
5) I came across this one whilst searching icons comms, but it's by
wendleberry, who I've got a few icons by. It's a quote from George Bernard Shaw, and is SO true.
6) I've had this one a LONG time, and it's by a user called
jetsetbarbie. It's not really 'positive, constructive, creative', but sometimes a great big "ARGH!" is just NECESSARY ;)

I came home from work and went straight out into the garden... and didn't come in again for three hours!
First I cleared all of the weeds and debris from the bottom patio:
The tree surgeon is coming on Monday to take down that awful, gigantic laurel from the bottom left corner, thank goodness - I hate it! It blocks all the light from that end of the garden - can't wait for it to be gone! I also planted some more tumbling tomato plants in a half-basket up on a hook on the conservatory... It's a bit high up, as I just used the hook where the previous owners had left it, but as they're tumblers, I should be able to pick the fruit OK once it forms!
In front of the conservatory are my potato sacks, which are now full (having spent a week having to be earthed up every single day!). I've stood them on wheelie plant holders to let the air circulate and so that they can be moved easily, as they're quite heavy now they're full. I then went out into the front garden and mowed the lawn, trimmed the edges by hand and dead-headed the peonies - generally tidying up!
I fed the peonies, poisoned the weeds in the lawn and then decided to start packing up. Unfortunately, packing up takes a good while at the moment as I need to water all of my veggies! I finally got inside at 7.15pm! I generated an awful lot of green waste, but luckily our local council collects it kerbside once a fortnight, so at least I know it'll be composted down and recycled:
Phew! Have definitely earned my spinach pizza and a night in front of the TV chilling! Still, it's great to come home and do this, it totally got work out of my head before the weekend proper and, although I'm knackered now, I feel really quite at peace with the world.

I love my cat, Purdy, she means the world to me.

I also love following the tweets of Sockington and Penny (@sockington and @pennycat) on Twitter.
This link was tweeted 'by' Socks today, it's so beautiful and sad, it almost made me cry:

I can't even begin to comprehend how I would feel if I lost Purdy. I love her so much that sometimes I think my heart might break just looking at her.

Showing my class: gammon, egg and chips for dinner!

It's a Kath Kidston design called 'shooting star'... I love stars and I love her retro-kitsch prints. I'd love to own loads of her stuff, although it doesn't really suit the 'modern' style of my home - need to buy a cute cottage and then will drench my home with her designs!
I was really stressed from work today (more teachers than children were at fault!), so when I got home I threw myself straight into the garden - I didn't even get changed first! I was out there in my formal work clothes pulling up weeds with relish! I weeded both the patios, ripped out tonnes of bindweed, earthed up my potatoes and dug out the grass that was growinging in the cracks at the edge of the driveway. Whilst doing the last job, I unearthed an ant nest with loads of ant lavae in it! YUK! They looked like maggots! I'm not usually fond of insecticides, but that just totally grossed me out and had to be drenched with copious amounts of ant poison powder! *shudder*

Welcome to the House of Infektion!
Joe still has his flu symptoms and is currently resting in bed until his doctors' appointment.
I spent the night alternately sweating, then freezing, and woke up with a raging sore throat, achy back and neck, headache etc. Thus am also not at work, and am only downstairs on the computer to email cover work in for my classes :( I too have a doctors appointment, albeit 40 minutes after his one.
I know - of course - that this is just a 'regular' virus and neither of us has pig flu, but when I called NHS direct they told us to get it checked out and not to go to work until we had the all-clear. Although, to be honest, I really don't think I could have made it to work today regardless. Ugh.
Now my ears hurt again so I'm going back to bed.
ETA: Dr confirms not pig flu, just viral, still feel shitty, but will go into work tomorrow. Have told Purdy it is cat flu and that is all her fault, lol.

I've spent today chilling, tidying and cleaning the house. I've also earthed up my potatoes, and fed the plants and lawn. Ooh, my shallots are sprouting too now, and my mum gave me some strawberry plants yesterday, so once I find a nice strawberry pot, I'll plant them out.
Yesterday I got up at the crack of dawn and donned my new maxi dress to got to Reading to see my family. Unfortunately, when I got off the train, it was chilly, breezy and pouring with rain! Inappropriate clothing, ahoy! Still, 4 completely random people stopped me on the street throughout the day to compliment me on the dress, so the coldness was worth it!
We went to Newbury to order my bridesmaid dress for my sister's wedding in October. I was happy, as the sample dress was WAY too big for me, STILL you could have fitted another person inside, lol. Was v. happy to be told that my vital stats are now 38-28-39 ...ALMOST hourglass! :D This is super reassuring when added to the nurse weighing me on Friday and telling me I am 'ideal' weight - 68kg, which is BMI 23 for me... Mind you, I'd still love to drop another 8 kilos if possible!
EDIT: DRESS PIC AND DETAIL REMOVED UNDER THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT ;)
PS: J has flu symptoms :| Still, NHSDirect didn't seem worried, so hey-ho! Mind you, his school have told him not to come in until he's seen a doctor and got a complete all clear!

As I've been having lots of problems with clothing for this heat, and, having had a LOUSY day at work, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and go shopping on my way home from work.
As well as some less glam essentials, I picked up three lovely dresses:

Left to right: Maxi retro dress that made me cry 'I DIE' Rachel Zoe-style, pretty embroidered linen dress for work (with requisite high neck line and knee length skirt, and a lovely dress in tshirt material, with gold embroidery and a deep V neck which will be so fun to wear casually in the heat.
Going to wear the middle dress to work tomorrow, and I'm still deciding which of the other two to wear on Saturday when I go bridesmaid-dress shopping with my sister and parents :)
Fashion makes me happy and I'm not ashamed of it!

After a lousy day at work, I came home and THREW myself into the garden, taking all my frustrations out there! I must have pulled up over 100 weeds (mainly rose bay willow herb), re-mowed the lawn (takes a few goes after it gets over-long) and then trimmed the edges by hand. Oh, I also ripped out handfulls of evil bindweed (yes, I know ripping it out doesn't do much, but it made me feel better) and then doused the weeds in the patio cracks with glysophate.
Really, sweating it out in the garden has made me feel much better!
